BitGo’s investors include the top tier investors from Silicon Valley to Wall Street, including: Craft Ventures, Digital Currency Group, DRW Ventures, Galaxy Digital Ventures, Goldman Sachs, Redpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners.
In 2010, BitGo CEO Mike Belshe was impressed by the technology behind bitcoin and the emerging cryptocurrency market for its novelty and its ability to change financial markets as we know them. He assisted with holding coins on behalf of himself and many prominent angel investors in Silicon Valley--effectively acting as their custodian. His approach at the time, which was effectively state-of-the-art, was to secure them on an offline laptop securely hidden beneath his couch. As Bitcoin prices rose, he realized he needed to find a better place to store their Bitcoin. In 2013, Mike founded BitGo and pioneered the world’s first multi-signature hot wallet for cryptocurrency. Today, BitGo wallets are the leading institutional-grade wallet for digital assets and are used by hundreds of exchanges and institutional investors around the world.
BitGo is the only company that has been focused exclusively on serving institutional clients. In 2017, two things became clear: institutional clients needed more than a wallet, and the existing crypto market structure was so fundamentally broken that it was preventing institutional investors from participating. The irony of the crypto markets is that digital assets, that are decentralized by design are traded on the most centralized markets ever created. No other asset class has exchanges that also act as custodians. Independent entities needed to be created, and in 2018, BitGo became a financial services company with the launch of BitGo Trust Company, the first qualified custodian purpose-built for storing digital assets.
Today, BitGo is focused on working with clients, partners, and regulators to deliver innovative security, custody, and liquidity solutions.
