Turning Institutional Interest in Tokenization and Stablecoins into Production Reality
BitGo's support of the Canton Network brings qualified custody solutions to our network participants.
Overview of Canton
The Canton Network is a privacy-enabled blockchain designed to support regulated financial activity across both traditional finance and decentralized finance. Its ecosystem includes some of the world's largest financial institutions, infrastructure providers, and asset issuers, all operating under strict regulatory, compliance, and risk requirements.
To support institutional participation at scale, Canton partnered with BitGo to deliver a secure, compliant custody solution for Canton Coin (CC) and assets issued under the CIP-56 Canton Token Standard, ensuring institutions could safely hold and manage assets within a regulated framework.
The Challenge
As adoption of the Canton Network expanded, the ecosystem faced a critical requirement: enabling institutions to custody Canton Coin and onchain assets in a way that met regulatory expectations without compromising Canton's privacy-first architecture.
Institutional participants require more than technical access to a network. They need:
-
A U.S.-based qualified custodian
-
Robust cold storage and multi-signature security
-
Operational controls aligned with regulatory and compliance obligations
-
Confidence that assets can be held, transferred, and settled securely at scale
Without a qualified custody pathway, institutional adoption of Canton Coin and CIP-56 assets would be constrained.
The Solution: Partnership with BitGo
Canton Network partnered with BitGo Bank & Trust, National Association, a federally chartered bank and qualified custodian for digital assets, to provide institutional-grade custody across the Canton ecosystem.
BitGo's custody infrastructure integrates directly with Canton's Global Synchronizer architecture, enabling qualified custody without disrupting the network's core privacy and interoperability design. Working closely with the Canton Foundation and Digital Asset, BitGo aligned its cold storage and multi-signature security model with Canton's technical and operational requirements.
Through this integration, BitGo now supports:
-
Qualified custody of Canton Coin (CC)
-
Custody of assets issued under the CIP-56 Canton Token Standard
-
Secure asset management via cold and hot self-custody wallets
-
Settlement and trading workflows for institutional participants
This collaboration filled a critical gap for institutions seeking compliant access to the Canton Network.
The Impact
With BitGo in place as a trusted custody provider, the Canton ecosystem can now support institutional participation across the full lifecycle of onchain financial activity.
Key outcomes include:
-
Institutional-grade custody for Canton Coin and CIP-56 assets through a U.S. qualified custodian
-
Support for a wide range of assets issued on Canton, including tokenized bonds, stablecoins, money-market funds, and wrapped crypto assets
-
Improved confidence for global financial institutions evaluating production-grade onchain deployment
-
A scalable custody foundation that supports continued ecosystem growth
For Canton Network participants, custody is no longer a barrier to adoption. Institutions can engage with the network knowing their assets are safeguarded within a regulated, bank-grade framework.
Why It Matters
Canton Network sits at the intersection of TradFi and DeFi, where trust, compliance, and operational certainty are prerequisites, not optional features. By partnering with BitGo, Canton ensures that its ecosystem meets institutional expectations from day one, enabling broader participation from banks, asset managers, and market infrastructure providers worldwide.
The Canton Network is the only public, permissionless blockchain purpose-built for institutional finance–uniquely combining privacy, compliance, and scalability. Governed by the Canton Foundation with participation from leading global financial institutions, Canton enables real-time, secure synchronization and settlement across multiple asset classes on a shared, interoperable infrastructure. The open-sourced network is powered by its native token, Canton Coin, and supports decentralized governance and collaborative application development. It’s the proven link between the promise of blockchain and the power of global finance, enabling finance to flow as it should.
